Vacuuming does not get road salt out of carpet
Every winter, Toronto puts down road salt from November to April, and every one of us walks it into the front hall. What lands on the carpet is not dirt. It is chloride crystals, and they behave differently.
Salt is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture out of the air. Ground into the pile it keeps drawing damp up through the fibre, and each time the carpet dries the crystals resurface as a chalky white bloom on the traffic lanes and the stair treads. That is why the white patches come back a few weeks after you clean them yourself. You lifted what was loose on the surface. What was down in the backing stayed there and simply wicked back up.
A vacuum can only take dry, loose soil. Salt has to be dissolved and physically pulled out, and that is precisely what hot-water extraction does. It is also why we push people to book in April rather than in December. Cleaning mid-season means doing it again in eight weeks.
Left alone for several seasons, salt does more than look bad. It stiffens the fibre, it accelerates wear in exactly the lanes that already get the most traffic, and on wool it can eventually break down the dye.
Carpet, rugs, upholstery and mattresses
Winter salt and grit
The reason most people call. Traffic lanes, stair treads and the two metres inside every door.
Pet stains and odour
Treated down into the underlay, because that is where the smell lives, not in the pile.
Sofas and sectionals
Fabric upholstery, cushions included. We test the fibre in a hidden spot before we touch the front of it.
Mattresses and rugs
Queen mattress one side, area rugs cleaned in place. Dust mite and sweat residue, not just visible marks.
Six steps, and one of them is a conversation
You send a few details
Rooms, items, fibre if you know it, and a photo of anything that worries you. Your price comes back the same day.
We inspect before we start
We walk the rooms with you and say honestly what will come out, what will improve and what is permanent. That conversation happens before the work, not after the invoice.
Dry soil comes out first
A thorough vacuum. Roughly 80% of what is in a carpet is dry grit, and extracting without lifting it first just turns it into mud.
Spots and traffic lanes are pre-treated
Different products for grease, protein, tannin and salt. Dwell time matters more than scrubbing.
Hot-water extraction
Heated solution in under pressure, straight back out with the soil. Rinsed so nothing sticky is left behind to attract dirt.
Groomed and dried
The pile is set in one direction and we speed the drying. Two to four hours for carpet.
What it costs
Per item, so you can add it up yourself. There is a $149 minimum per visit, which is why most people book two or three things at once rather than one room.
Heavily soiled, very large or delicate items are quoted from photos before we book. Booking carpet alongside a move-out clean or a deep clean saves a second visit.
What we do not do
Shorter list than the one above, and more useful. If you need any of these, we will tell you on the phone call rather than after we arrive.
North York, Thornhill and midtown
Our route
Based in Bathurst Manor. Ravine-lot houses in Bayview Village and the larger homes in Thornhill carry the most area rugs, which is where salt ends up.
We drive to you
Fifteen to twenty-five minutes south. Same prices, same guarantee. Book a little further ahead so the route works.
What clients say
"Not only to get my home cleaned on a regular basis but also anytime I have an old tenant move out and a new tenant come in. Very reasonable, very professional, and they do an immaculate job all the time."
"Yosef and his team did great work with a difficult job I gave them. They were on time, professional, and really went the extra mile with the cleaning! I will work with them again, for sure."
"Our cleaner was Zimfira and she did a stellar job in cleaning every corner of the house - super efficient and well trained. She knew which cleaning agents to use on different kinds of surfaces."
Questions we get asked
How much does carpet cleaning cost in North York?
Rooms start at $69 each, a three-seat sofa at $119, an armchair at $69, a queen mattress at $79 and an area rug at $89. There is a $149 minimum per visit, so most people book two or three items together. You get the full number before anything is booked, and it does not change on the day.
Will winter road salt actually come out?
Usually yes, unless the fibre has been permanently bleached by it. Salt is water-soluble, which is exactly what hot-water extraction is built for. The longer it sits the more it works into the backing, so the best time is April, right after the salt season ends.
How long until I can walk on it?
Two to four hours for carpet. A thick wool area rug takes longer. Keep the room ventilated and it dries faster. You can walk on it sooner in clean socks if you have to.
What is hot-water extraction, and is it the same as steam cleaning?
It is what most people mean by steam cleaning, though no actual steam is involved. Heated solution is injected into the fibre under pressure and pulled straight back out with the soil. It is different from dry powder or bonnet buffing, which clean the surface but leave what is down in the pile. Carpet manufacturers generally specify extraction for warranty cleaning.
Do you treat pet odours?
Yes, as an add-on. It matters that the treatment reaches the underlay, because that is usually where the smell actually lives. Surface deodorising masks it for a week and then it comes back.
Do you move furniture?
We move what two people can lift safely: dining chairs, light tables, ottomans. We do not move beds, wardrobes, pianos or anything with electronics on it. Clear those in advance if you want the carpet under them done.
Do I need to be home?
For the first visit, yes, at least at the start and the end. We walk the rooms with you before we start and again before we leave. After that, plenty of clients leave us with access instructions.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Yes. The solutions are rinsed out with the soil rather than left in the fibre, which is the main safety difference against shampoo methods. Keep pets off until it is dry, mostly so they do not track it around.
Do you clean carpets in condos and apartments?
Yes, that is a lot of our work along Yonge. Tell us the building's access routine and whether there is an elevator booking to work around.
Can you guarantee every stain will come out?
No, and anyone who does is guessing. Bleach, dye transfer from a rug backing, pet damage that has reached the subfloor and old set stains that have been scrubbed with the wrong product may be permanent. We tell you which is which before we start, not after we invoice.
